Dolly Rebecca Parton
Dolly Rebecca Parton was created on
January 19, 1946, in Pittman Center (Tennessee). She was the daughter of Avie
Lee Parton and Robert Lee Parton in Sevierville. Parton is a domestic worker
and Parton is a farmer of tobacco. When she was 12, she was performing on
Knoxville TV and at 13 she had already begun recording for a small label and
appearing on the Grand Ole Opry. She graduated from high school in 1964, and
then moved to Nashville to begin her country-singing journey. Carl Dean, an
asphalt-paving businessman, was drawn to her and they were married on May 30 in
1966. Porter Wagoner hired her in 1967 to perform on his show The Porter
Wagoner Show (1961). She was on the show for seven years. Her duets made waves
and she was a part of the group that Porter Wagoner had at the Grand Ole Opry.
She also sold records and toured. Her smash hit "Joshua", which
reached #1 in 1970 was her biggest hit single. She chose to go solo while she
recorded duets with the singer. In 1974, she quit him to be a solo artist.
Dolly was a hugely loved singer/songwriter. Dolly was awarded numerous Country
Music Association awards (1968-1971 1971, 1975-1976 and 1975-1976). She was a
small (5'0") beauty, who was perfect for television. In the late 1970s,
Dolly was often seen on talk-shows and specials on TV before getting her own
show, Dolly (1976). Dolly received her first Grammy award for Best Female
Country Vocal Performance in 1977 for "Here You Come Again". Dolly's
first film appearance was in 9 to 5 (1980) and she earned an Oscar nomination
for the song's title track, as well as Grammy Awards 2, 3, Best Country Song,
and Best Female Country Vocal Performance for the track "Nine to
Five." Her fame grew with performing in The Best Little Whorehouse in
Texas (1982) and in Rhinestone (1984) with the song "Tennessee Homesick
Blues". She is the CEO of Dolly Parton Enterprises, a $100 million media
empire, and in 1986, she established Dollywood the theme park in Pigeon Forge,
Tennessee, celebrating her Smoky-Mountain upbringing. She was in the Dolly
(1987) television show. In 1988, she received another Grammy: Best Country
Performance Duo or Group with Vocals for "Trio".
